Learning to swim at any age can be challenging. A person may be afraid of the water or unsure of their swimming abilities. There are 10 swimming tips for beginners to help them learn how to stay afloat and build up their confidence in the water.
One of the ways to protect the eyes and adjust to the water is to wear goggles. This will allow a person to keep the water out of their eyes, so they can focus on their swimming moves.
Start off Slowly
If a person has a feature of the water they should not spend a great deal of time in it. It is okay to be in the water for 5 to 10 minutes until a person is able to build up their confidence.
When a person is swimming, they should look up during the lap. This will allow them to see what it around them and get a feel for being in the water.
Start Out in Still Water
When learning to swim it is best to start out in a pool where the water is still. When swimming in a lake or ocean a person will need to be aware of the movement of the water. There are also dangers such as currents and riptides that should be left for experienced swimmers.
Start Out Low
Start out a depth that is comfortable and a person can stand in without a problem. Do not go in water that is too deep. If something happens a person should be able to put their feet down and put their head above the water.
Avoid water that it too cold. The water should be at a comfortable temperature. If the water it too cold the body can become stiff and it will be harder to move.
Floating is one of the most basic moves in swimming. To learn to float hold on to the side of the pool and put the legs out behind the body. The upper body will float. This can be practiced time and time again until the entire body is on top of the water.
No matter what happens it is important to stay calm at all times. Do not flail the limbs or hyperventilate. If a person is not able to swim they should try to go flat on their back until they calm down.
Learn to Exhale Underwater
While is the shallow water take a deep breath and put only the face under water. Exhale slowly and blow bubbles. Once a person is out of breath they need to come back up.
Practice Kicking the Legs
Just about every swimming move involves kicking the legs. Hold on to a float or the side of the pool and practice kicking. This will allow a person to focus on their kicks and not worry about breathing.
